WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Ohio National Guard welcomed home about 45 soldiers from the 684th Medical Company on Thursday.

A ceremony was held for the returning troops at the Westerville Christian Church.
“You kind of feel like a rock star and everything. It’s really great,” said Sgt. Xavier Fields.

The unit mobilized in September 2011 and deployed to nine locations in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, according to the Department of Defense.

Pentagon figures indicated the 684th treated approximately 200 cases of significant combat trauma during the deployment.
Life for Specialist Megan Howard has not been easy during her deployment.

“You have overcome some amazing battles. Everything seems to be turning around,” said Howard.

Her house burned down about a year before she left. Now, she’s being reunited with her 4-year-old son and they get a new home.

“I got a free house through Final Salute,” she explained.

Three soldiers earned the Bronze Star Medal and 42 soldiers earned the Army Commendation Medal during the deployment.
